On the 5th of this month, the White House confirmed that the US Presidential Envoy for Hostages Affairs, Burrell, had held talks with representatives of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in Doha, the capital of Qatar, over the past few weeks. According to Axios News on the 10th, since the aforementioned "secret talks" were exposed, although Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu did not publicly argue with US President Trump, Israeli officials privately expressed anger towards the US move. The report quoted an Israeli official as saying that Israel's Minister of Strategic Affairs, Ron Delmer, stated at a security cabinet meeting on the 9th that Burrell's talks with Hamas do not represent the position of the Trump administration. Axios According to news reports, Delmer told other ministers during a security cabinet meeting that Israel had received assurances from the Trump administration that "such incidents will not happen again," and that US Middle East envoy Witkov would be the only channel for negotiations on the release of detainees.
The report mentioned that White House Press Secretary Levitt stated on the 10th that Trump "fully supports" the talks between his human rights envoy Burrell and Hamas. But the US government has also sent a signal that it does not want the aforementioned talks and Israel's dissatisfaction with the talks to hinder the achievement of the Gaza agreement. The report stated that Delmer's above statement contradicts Levitt's statement.
This is not the first time that foreign media has recently revealed Delmer's dissatisfaction with Burrell. The Times of Israel reported on the 7th, citing informed Western officials, that Israel learned on the 4th that US officials had direct talks with a delegation led by senior Hamas member Khalil Hayah. Subsequently, Delmer spoke with Burrell on the phone and "rebuked" him for discussing "personnel exchanges" with Hamas without the consent of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, that is, how many Palestinian detainees Israel would release in exchange for Hamas releasing Alexander and returning the bodies of four detainees with dual US Israeli citizenship.
Regarding this, Burrell explained that the talks are in the "preliminary discussion" stage, and to reach a final decision, it is necessary to obtain the consent of the Israeli side. In addition, according to Axios News Network, Burrell also stated on the 9th local time that although he understands Israel's concerns, the United States is not an agent of Israel.
